New Delhi, Sep 26: The Odisha Pavilion has received the Best Award in the State Category at the 9th India International Water Week (IIWW) 2026, recognising the state’s efforts to promote climate-resilient water management, strengthen irrigation systems and involve local communities in water governance.
The five-day international event was held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi from September 22 to 26 under the theme “Climate Resilient Water Management”, with Odisha participating as the Partner State.
The award-winning pavilion presented Odisha’s integrated approach to water resource management, bringing together water conservation, irrigation development, efficient water use, climate-resilient agriculture and community participation.
Climate-resilient agriculture takes centre stage
One of the major attractions at the pavilion was the Odisha Integrated Irrigation Project for Climate Resilient Agriculture (OIIPCRA). The project showcased initiatives aimed at improving agricultural resilience through better irrigation systems and efficient farming practices.
The display highlighted measures including restoration of minor irrigation systems, direct-seeded rice cultivation, green manuring, crop diversification and integrated rice-fish farming. It also showcased access to agricultural machinery through Custom Hiring Centres.
These initiatives demonstrate how irrigation infrastructure and agricultural innovation can work together to help farmers adapt to changing climate conditions while improving the use of available water resources.
Kanupur project highlights irrigation infrastructure
The pavilion also featured a model of the Kanupur Irrigation Project, highlighting Odisha’s irrigation infrastructure and efforts to improve water availability according to local requirements.
The presentation focused on the connection between water infrastructure and agricultural needs, underlining the importance of reliable irrigation systems for farming communities.
Pani Panchayat showcases community participation
Another key feature was the Pani Panchayat model, which highlighted the role of farmers and local institutions in water-use planning and irrigation management.
The pavilion also included a Best Practices Corner and interactive activities aimed at creating greater awareness about water conservation and community-led solutions.
Water management linked with livelihoods
The Odisha pavilion presented water management as a broader development issue, linking irrigation, agricultural productivity and community participation with the livelihoods of rural communities.
The recognition at IIWW 2026 provides a national and international platform for Odisha to showcase its experience in addressing water-management challenges and developing approaches suited to climate-related risks.
As climate variability increases pressure on water resources, the state’s focus on efficient irrigation, conservation, resilient farming practices and grassroots participation places water management at the centre of efforts to strengthen agricultural and rural livelihoods.
The Best State Award at IIWW 2026 thus recognises Odisha’s efforts to bring together infrastructure, agricultural innovation and community participation as part of its approach to climate-resilient water management.
