Bhubaneswar, Oct. 5 (UDN): Odisha Police have intensified preventive and enforcement operations ahead of the upcoming festival season, executing 1,448 non-bailable warrants (NBWs) and initiating proceedings against 1,012 people under Section 129 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
The statewide action is part of the special ‘Daman’ campaign, launched on September 21 under the direction of DGP Vinaytosh Mishra to target criminals, anti-social elements and illegal activities.
Major Crackdown on Narcotics
Police units across the state, including district police, Commissionerate Police and Railway Police, have carried out coordinated operations against the illegal drug trade.
During the campaign, 89 cases were registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, resulting in the arrest of 109 persons.
Police seized around 8.13 tonnes of ganja, while 19,387 cannabis plants were destroyed. Enforcement teams also recovered 394.645 grams of brown sugar and 1,066 bottles of cough syrup.
Illegal Liquor Trade Under Scanner
The campaign also targeted the illegal manufacture and transportation of liquor.
Police registered 1,707 cases under the Excise Act and arrested 140 persons. Seizures included 10,298.24 litres of illicit country liquor, 2,922.409 litres of foreign liquor and 1,092.54 litres of Aska-40.
Authorities also seized 800 kg of poch and 81 litres of mahuli liquor during the operations.
Gambling, Extortion and Arms Cases
As part of the crackdown on other illegal activities, police registered 46 gambling-related cases and arrested 67 people, recovering ₹4,36,086.
Sixteen cases were registered over alleged forced collection of donations, leading to 12 arrests and seizure of ₹10,520.
Police also registered six cases involving illegal possession of arms, ammunition and explosives. The seizures included five guns, one revolver, four rounds of ammunition, one magazine, two empty cartridges, 2.5 kg of gunpowder and two swords.
Action Against Organised Crime
The campaign also focused on organised criminal activities. Seven cases were registered in this category, with 18 persons arrested, according to the police.
Border Checks Intensified
To prevent the movement of criminals and the transportation of narcotics, liquor, arms and other prohibited materials, police conducted 1,830 blocking and border-sealing operations across the state.
Checking has also been intensified on inter-district and inter-state routes as part of the preventive security measures ahead of the festival season.
DGP Vinaytosh Mishra said the enforcement drive would continue in the coming days to maintain peace and security during the festivals while strengthening crime prevention and policing across Odisha.
