Koraput,Oct 24 [UDN}: A new cancer diagnosis and treatment facility equipped with modern medical technology was inaugurated at Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput to strengthen early detection and treatment of cancer patients in the district.
Koraput MLA Raghuram Machha and the District Collector of Koraput attended the inauguration ceremony as chief guests and formally dedicated the newly established cancer department to the public. The initiative marks a significant milestone in improving healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to specialised medical services for people across the district.
The establishment of the facility is particularly important for Koraput, where the number of cancer patients has reportedly been increasing. Until now, many patients from the district had to travel to distant cities such as Berhampur, Cuttack and Bhubaneswar to undergo cancer diagnosis and receive treatment. These journeys often placed additional financial and physical burdens on patients and their families, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
With the introduction of modern diagnostic equipment and cancer care facilities at the hospital, patients will now be able to access essential services locally, especially during the early stages of the disease. The centre is expected to help facilitate the timely identification of cancer, enable early medical intervention and reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for preliminary diagnosis and treatment.
According to hospital authorities, the newly inaugurated centre will provide several essential services, including cancer screening, biopsy facilities and initial-stage chemotherapy. These services are expected to play an important role in identifying suspected cancer cases, supporting diagnostic assessments and initiating treatment at an earlier stage, depending on individual patients’ medical requirements.
The facility is being viewed as a major achievement for Koraput district, which has a substantial tribal population and many residents from economically weaker sections. Improved access to cancer-related healthcare within the district could help patients seek medical attention sooner, reduce travel-related expenses and make essential diagnostic services more accessible to rural and remote communities.
The inauguration reflects efforts to strengthen district-level healthcare infrastructure and bring specialised medical services closer to the people. By making early cancer detection and selected treatment facilities available at Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital, the initiative is expected to provide considerable relief to patients and their families while supporting the broader goal of improving healthcare access in Koraput and its surrounding areas.
