10th December 2024: The Maharashtra government is set to submit a proposal to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to include Lonar Lake in Buldhana district on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list. This initiative aims to elevate the lake’s status as a major global tourism destination and boost conservation efforts.
Lonar Lake, formed by a meteorite impact, is not only a geological marvel but also houses ancient temples, some over 1,200 years old. The proposal emphasizes its scientific, environmental, and archaeological importance, along with the urgent need for continued conservation.
Buldhana District Collector Kiran Patil stated that the proposal is in its final stages and will soon be sent to ASI for review. If accepted, it will then be submitted to UNESCO for approval. Local activists and officials are advocating for better tourism infrastructure, such as road signs and hospitality services, to enhance visitor experiences and support local job creation.
