21st February 2025: The Odisha government has announced plans to construct 16 new dams and 15 reservoirs on the Mahanadi River to address the decreasing water flow in the state’s lower regions. In addition to the dams, 41 in-stream storage structures are also planned. The state is taking legal steps to ensure fair water distribution with neighboring Chhattisgarh. Odisha has allocated ₹51,000 crore for 31 large and medium water projects, 27 reservoirs, and 79 smaller initiatives, ensuring long-term water security for its residents.
