Hyderabad, 16th August 2026: “NMDC has a vital role to play in building India’s future,” said Shri Amitava Mukherjee, CMD, NMDC Ltd, as the company celebrated India’s 80th Independence Day with a renewed commitment to strengthening the nation’s mineral security, industrial growth and journey towards self-reliance.
The event was graced by Shri Vinay Kumar Director (Technical), Shri Joydeep Dasgupta, Director (Production), Shri Krishna Kumar Thakur, Director (Personnel), Shri Anurag Kapil, Director (Finance), Shri Vivek Nishant Nath, Director (Commercial) and Shri C Neelakanta Reddy, CVO along with employees and their family members.
Addressing employees and their families at the NMDC Corporate Office in Hyderabad after unfurling the National Flag, Shri Mukherjee said, “As India enters its eightieth year of freedom, we reaffirm our role as active builders of a self-reliant, confident and resurgent India.”
Calling the past year “truly historic” for NMDC, Shri Mukherjee highlighted the company’s record-breaking performance in FY26. NMDC became the first mining company in India to produce more than 50 million tonnes of iron ore in a single year, achieving record production of 53.15 million tonnes and sales of 50.23 million tonnes.
The growth momentum has continued into FY27. In Q1 FY27, NMDC recorded 15.12 million tonnes of production, registering 26% growth over the corresponding period last year. Sales stood at 11.73 million tonnes, while Q1 turnover reached Rs. 6,795 crore, an increase of 2% over Q1 FY26.
Building on this momentum, NMDC is targeting 60 million tonnes of iron ore production in FY27. Strategic initiatives to enhance production capacity, improve operational efficiency and strengthen infrastructure will support this target and reinforce the company’s journey towards its long-term ambition of 100 million tonnes by 2030.
NMDC’s growth strategy is increasingly extending beyond iron ore, with the company strengthening its presence across coal, steel and strategic minerals.
NMDC has operationalised its first coal asset, the Tokisud North Coal Mine in Jharkhand. At Bailadila, the commissioning of Deposit-4 and Deposit-13 will further strengthen the company’s processing capacity. NMDC has also expanded its international presence with operations in Dubai, pursuing opportunities in copper and other strategic minerals.
The Nagarnar Steel Plant continues to strengthen NMDC’s downstream presence. The plant has surpassed 7 million tonnes of cumulative hot metal production since inception and has delivered profits for two consecutive quarters, including a Q1 FY27 profit after tax of Rs. 50.51 crore.
Highlighting the company’s social impact, Shri Mukherjee said that the true measure of NMDC’s success also lies in the lives it touches.
Through the expansion of its flagship Balika Shiksha Yojana, NMDC has supported the higher education of 783 young women to date. Under Chhoo Lo Aasmaan, 22 students are expected to secure MBBS admissions this year, marking the best performance in the initiative’s history.
“A nation is not built by machines and balance sheets alone. It is built by the character, commitment and hard work of its people,” Shri Mukherjee said, acknowledging the contribution of NMDC’s miners, engineers, officers, workers and partners across every project and office.
The Independence Day celebrations across NMDC’s mining units and offices reflected the spirit of patriotism, unity and collective responsibility, with employees and their families participating in the celebrations.
As India enters a new phase of its development journey, NMDC remains committed to expanding mineral production, strengthening resource security, advancing technology and supporting industrial growth.
At the end of the event, CMD Shri Amitava Mukherjee and functional directors presented awards to school children who won NMDC Chess Tournament 2026 and employees participated in other Independence Day games.
