Bhubaneswar, Sept. 15 (UDN): Odisha’s scientific community has received a major boost with Professor Himanshu Sekhar Biswal of the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar, being elected as a Fellow of the prestigious National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI).
The fellowship, considered one of the country’s significant recognitions in the field of science, will come into effect from January 2027.
Prof. Biswal has been recognised for his contributions to chemistry, particularly his research on hydrogen bonding and non-covalent interactions. His work involves the use of advanced spectroscopic techniques to study these fundamental chemical interactions.
Advanced Research Facility at NISER
During his tenure at NISER, Prof. Biswal has established a sophisticated laser spectroscopy laboratory, strengthening the institute’s research infrastructure and creating facilities for advanced studies in spectroscopy.
His research and laboratory development efforts have contributed to expanding the capabilities available to scientists and researchers working in the field.
The NASI recognition is particularly notable for Odisha’s scientific community. Reports indicate that Prof. Biswal is the first chemist conducting research in the state to receive the prestigious fellowship in around 35 years.
From Farming Family to National Recognition
Prof. Biswal’s achievement also stands out for his personal journey. He hails from a farming family in the Bari area of Jajpur district and went on to build a career in advanced scientific research.
His journey from a rural background to becoming a nationally recognised researcher is being viewed as an encouraging example for students and young scientists aspiring to pursue careers in science.
Speaking about the recognition, Prof. Biswal said he had developed several pieces of equipment as part of his research work, which contributed to the honour. He also noted that he is among only two scientists from Odisha selected for the NASI fellowship.
The recognition is expected to further highlight Odisha’s growing contribution to scientific research and inspire a new generation of researchers in the state.
