9-Foot Indian Rock Python Rescued From Malkangiri Home After Ducks Vanish

Malkangiri, Sept. 5 (UDN): A giant Indian Rock Python measuring nearly nine feet and weighing around 20 kg was rescued from a house in Odisha’s Malkangiri district after a series of mysterious duck disappearances led a family to the reptile’s hiding spot.

The dramatic rescue took place in Godaguda village, where a local youth who rears chickens and ducks had been puzzled by the unexplained loss of his birds over the past few days.

Missing Ducks Lead To Shocking Discovery

According to locals, one or two ducks had been disappearing almost every day, raising concerns that a predator was lurking nearby.

When another duck went missing on Saturday morning, the owner began searching around his house. During the search, he discovered the massive python hiding inside the premises, triggering panic among family members.

The frightened family immediately alerted neighbours, who then contacted the Snake Helpline for assistance.

Safe Rescue And Release

Responding to the call, a police homeguard associated with the Snake Helpline reached the village and carefully rescued the snake without causing harm to either the reptile or the residents.

After examining the python and confirming that it was healthy, the rescue team, with the assistance of the Forest Department, released it safely into a nearby forest.

A Protected Species

The Indian Rock Python is a non-venomous and protected species under the Wildlife Protection Act. Wildlife rescuers often advise residents not to approach or attempt to capture such snakes on their own, as they can become defensive when threatened.

The incident ended without any injuries, bringing relief to the family while allowing the python to return safely to its natural habitat.
