Bhubaneswar, Aug 13: North Odisha experienced extremely heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours as a low-pressure system over the region brought intense showers to several districts.
According to rainfall data released by the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar at 8:30 am, Bhogorai in Balasore district recorded the highest rainfall of 236 mm during the period.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that four stations recorded extremely heavy rainfall, 15 stations received very heavy rainfall and 16 stations recorded heavy rainfall.
Balasore and Mayurbhanj were among the worst-affected districts. In Mayurbhanj, Shamakhunta recorded 230 mm, followed by Baripada at 215.2 mm. Other locations that received heavy rainfall included Bangiriposhi at 170.8 mm, Betanati at 167 mm, Muruda at 132 mm and Chandanpur at 130.2 mm.
Balasore district also recorded widespread heavy rainfall. Apart from Bhogorai, Rajghat received 204.8 mm, NH-5 Govindpur 185.6 mm, Balasore town 169.4 mm and Jaleswar 162 mm. Remuna, Bahanga and Rairangpur also recorded rainfall exceeding 120 mm.
Significant rainfall was reported from other parts of the state. Champua and Panposh recorded 119 mm each, while Joda in Keonjhar received 96.2 mm. Naktideul in Sambalpur recorded 70.4 mm, while Kodala in Ganjam received 65.6 mm.
The Meteorological Centre attributed the intense rainfall to the prevailing low-pressure system over the region.
With heavy rainfall continuing across several areas, authorities have been advised to closely monitor river and reservoir water levels and remain prepared for possible waterlogging and flooding in vulnerable parts of north Odisha.
