Bhubaneswar, Nov 14, 2024: The Bhubaneswar Metro Project will result in the cutting of several trees along the Janpath road as part of the construction plan. Trees on both sides of the road will be removed to make space for the metro rail line, which will run from Biju Patnaik International Airport to Trishulia.
Currently, about 1,400 trees within the city are on the list to be cut down. This includes some trees that have been around for 10 years. This decision comes as part of the ongoing urban development efforts, which have already seen many trees being cut for other infrastructure projects.
Though the metro project promises to enhance public transport in the city, it also raises environmental concerns, with the cutting down of trees leading to the loss of green space and affecting local ecosystems. The government has plans for compensatory tree plantation drives, but concerns about the long-term ecological impact remain.
