10th September , Bhubaneswar, Odisha: In a move to modernize its traffic infrastructure, Bhubaneswar is set to upgrade 25 additional junctions with AI-powered adaptive traffic signals. Spearheaded by Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL), this initiative is part of the city’s broader effort to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance road safety through smart technology.
Bhubaneswar to Add 25 More AI-Based Smart Traffic Signals.
The LED strips will illuminate the entire traffic pole red when the signal is “stop.” This feature enhances visibility and helps riders respond appropriately.

The adaptive traffic signalling system, introduced in 2017 under the Smart City Mission, is already operational at 50 junctions. It uses artificial intelligence to monitor real-time traffic conditions and automatically adjust signal timings based on the volume and flow of vehicles. This dynamic approach replaces fixed signal cycles with responsive control, resulting in smoother traffic movement and reduced waiting times.
With the expansion, Bhubaneswar will have a total of 75 smart intersections, supported by additional pelican crossings for pedestrians and caution-zone blinkers to alert drivers in high-risk areas.
Why This Technology Matters
- The AI-based system brings significant improvements to urban mobility:
- Reduced Traffic Congestion: By adapting to real-time traffic conditions, the system minimizes idle time at signals and helps maintain a steady flow of vehicles.
- Improved Fuel Efficiency: Shorter wait times at signals lead to reduced fuel consumption, which is both cost-effective for drivers and environmentally beneficial.
- Enhanced Road Safety: New features such as LED-lit poles that glow red during a “stop” signal improve visibility for all road users, particularly two-wheeler riders and pedestrians. This helps reduce the risk of accidents at intersections.
- Data-Driven Traffic Management: The system collects valuable data on traffic volume and vehicle movement patterns, which helps city planners optimize infrastructure and plan for future growth.
- Pedestrian-Friendly Design: With dedicated pelican signals, the system ensures safer crossings for pedestrians, making roads more inclusive for all.
Public Benefits
Residents of Bhubaneswar will experience noticeable improvements in their daily commutes. Faster signal response, shorter traffic jams, and safer crossings will contribute to a more comfortable and reliable urban travel experience. The initiative also supports environmental goals by reducing vehicle emissions and energy consumption.
This expansion marks another step in Bhubaneswar’s journey toward becoming a fully connected and technology-driven smart city, where innovation is at the core of public service delivery.
