Collector-Led Efforts Ensure Public Safety Amid Cyclone Threat in Malkangiri

Malkangiri,  Nov  2 (UDN):       The Malkangiri district administration’s advance preparations, timely intervention and well-coordinated response have played a significant role in successfully managing the cyclone situation, ensuring the safety of people across the district. Under the direct supervision and strong leadership of District Collector and District Magistrate Prathamesh Arvind Rajeshirke, various government departments worked in close coordination to protect public life and property.

The District Collector played a key role in overseeing emergency response operations, maintaining uninterrupted essential services and supervising restoration activities. The coordinated efforts of the administration helped ensure that the situation was managed effectively, with public safety remaining the highest priority throughout the emergency.

As part of the precautionary measures, the district administration evacuated a total of 15,477 people in advance and safely accommodated them in 218 operational cyclone shelters across the district. These arrangements helped protect residents from potential risks arising from the adverse weather conditions.

Special attention was given to healthcare services, particularly the safety of pregnant women. As many as 298 pregnant women were shifted to hospitals in advance to ensure timely medical assistance and avoid complications during the cyclone. Of these, 203 institutional deliveries were successfully conducted, reflecting the administration’s focus on safeguarding maternal and child health during the emergency.

Meanwhile, Malkangiri district recorded a total rainfall of 254.24 mm, with an average rainfall of 36.22 mm. Although the intensity of rainfall has now reduced considerably, light drizzling continues in some parts of the district.

Due to the systematic preparedness and effective management by the administration, no damage to public infrastructure has been reported in the district. In a few locations, tree branches had fallen and disrupted road connectivity. However, fire service personnel promptly cleared the fallen branches on a war footing, restoring smooth movement and ensuring that transportation and communication services were not disrupted for long.

With the weather situation gradually returning to normal, the district administration has now shifted its focus towards providing assistance to farmers who may have suffered crop losses due to the continuous rainfall. The District Emergency Control Room is closely monitoring the overall situation and coordinating necessary response measures.

To ensure a prompt assessment of possible agricultural losses, the Chief District Agriculture Officer, Assistant Collectors and officials from the Emergency Department have started field visits to affected areas and are reviewing the ground situation. The administration has expedited the crop damage assessment process so that eligible affected farmers can receive government assistance as early as possible in accordance with the prescribed rules and guidelines.

The district administration has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that no resident or farmer faces unnecessary hardship due to the adverse weather conditions. It has assured the people that the administration will continue to stand by them and provide all necessary support during the recovery process.

The successful evacuation of thousands of people, timely medical arrangements for pregnant women, uninterrupted essential services and prompt restoration of connectivity highlight the coordinated disaster-management efforts undertaken by the Malkangiri district administration under the leadership of Collector Prathamesh Arvind Rajeshirke.
