D. Gukesh Becomes Youngest World Chess Champion, Making History for India

13th December 2024 : Indian Grandmaster D. Gukesh made history on December 12, 2024, by becoming the youngest World Chess Champion at just 18 years old. In a thrilling final game, Gukesh triumphed over reigning champion Ding Liren, securing the title with a score of 7.5 points against Ding’s 6.5. This victory marks a significant milestone for India in the world of chess, with Gukesh following the path of the legendary Viswanathan Anand, who claimed the World Championship five times.

Gukesh, who has been mentored by Anand at his academy in Chennai, shared his excitement after the match: “This is a moment I’ve dreamed about for the past 10 years, and I’m thrilled to see it come true.”

Along with the title, Gukesh takes home a prize of USD 1.3 million (approximately Rs. 11.03 crore) from the tournament’s total purse of 2.5 million dollars. His victory not only marks a personal achievement but also signals a bright future for Indian chess on the global stage.
