Descendants of Freedom Fighters Receive Invitation and Recognition

Papdahandi,14th Aug 2025:  A preparatory meeting for the August 24 Papdahandi Shaheed Smriti Diwas (Martyrs’ Memorial Day) celebration was held on Tuesday at the Block Conference Hall under the chairmanship of District Collector D. Maheshwar Swain. The meeting was attended by Zilla Parishad Chairperson Motiram Nayak, former MP Parshuram Majhi, MLA’s representative Rajanikant Sasmal, MP’s representative Somanath Pujari, and the Minister’s representative Lingaraj, among others.

Discussions were held on how to organize the program smoothly. Key decisions included appointing a caretaker for the Shaheed Minar (martyrs’ memorial), raising awareness to ban plastic use in and around the memorial and block premises, inviting and felicitating the descendants of freedom fighters who were martyred during the independence struggle, holding an all-faith prayer, publicizing the event, and making arrangements for food.

It was also discussed to send a proposal to the government for financial assistance for the event, as well as to form a new committee. The Collector announced that the villages of 90 martyrs will be named as “Mahapurusha Adarsha Grams” (Great Personalities’ Model Villages).

He further urged the BDO and GPO to ensure utilization of ₹10 crore in grants that remain unspent across 23 panchayats of Papdahandi block.

The meeting was attended by Shaheed Smriti Committee President Manoranjan Tripathy, social worker Jagannath Mahapatra, Tahsildar Tapan Nayak, GPO Akshay Pattnayak, BPC Shashikala Das, along with many intellectuals.
