Bhubaneswar, Aug 21 (UDN): Odisha Director General of Police Vinaytosh Mishra on Thursday reviewed the state’s law and order situation and directed senior police officials to step up crime prevention, strengthen public service delivery and ensure adequate security ahead of the upcoming festive season.
A high-level meeting was held at the State Police Headquarters, with Range IGs/DIGs and district SPs participating through video conference. The meeting reviewed crime trends, sensitive areas, major cases, policing arrangements and administrative issues across the state.
Focus on citizen-friendly policing
Addressing the officers, DGP Mishra stressed the need for a citizen-centric approach at police stations. He directed police personnel to listen patiently to complaints, treat citizens with respect and ensure impartial and speedy investigations.
He also asked officers to maintain regular attendance and improve the functioning of police stations. SDPOs were directed to conduct frequent visits to subordinate police stations and closely supervise their functioning.
Security stepped up ahead of festivals
With a series of major festivals scheduled between August and November, including Janmashtami, Ganesh Puja, Nuakhai, Vishwakarma Puja, Durga Puja, Ghajalaxmi Puja, Eid-e-Milad, Diwali, Kali Puja, Anla Navami, Panchuka and Bali Yatra, the DGP called for advance security planning.
Police units have been directed to identify vulnerable and sensitive locations, ensure adequate deployment, strengthen crowd and traffic management and maintain close coordination with local representatives and community groups.
The DGP also called for regular peace committee meetings and proactive engagement with communities to prevent tension and maintain communal harmony.
Strict action against organised crime
On crime control, Mishra directed district police to take stringent legal action against habitual and organised criminals. He called for intensified patrolling and checking to curb illegal cattle transportation and smuggling.
Police were also asked to conduct regular enforcement drives against illegal mineral extraction and transportation, unauthorised cracker manufacturing and traffic violations.
Social media and cybercrime under scanner
The DGP directed police to closely monitor social media platforms for rumours, inflammatory material and misleading or offensive content, and to initiate legal action wherever violations are detected.
He also stressed the need to strengthen criminal intelligence networks so that police can receive early information about potential crimes and take preventive measures.
On cybercrime, Mishra directed officials to improve the functioning of cyber police stations and make investigations more effective. District SPs were asked to visit cyber police stations at least once a week to review cases and monitor their performance.
The meeting was attended by senior police officers, including Additional DGPs Soumendra Priyadarshi, Sanjay Kumar, Prateek Mohanty and Jatindra Koel, IGP S. Praveen Kumar, DIGs Kanwar Vishal Singh, Charan Singh Meena and Kishore Kumar Banoth, along with Range IGs/DIGs and district SPs.
