Kundura, 17th Sept 2025: In the 100-bed tribal girls’ hostel located at Bhejahaandi village under Dangarpunsi Panchayat in Kundura block, 13 girl students have been affected by diarrhoea. Around 7 a.m. today, after experiencing repeated bouts of diarrhoea, all of them were admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital in Jeypore.
According to school authorities, the affected students include Tulasi Rampuria, Mamata Bhumia, Padmini Pradhani, Bhagabati Khul, Shua Parja, Basanti Majhi, Anita Barik, Rashmita Harijan, Ambika Santa, Gorimani Talia, Ichhabati Bhatara, Bharasa Majhi, and Supriya Das (daughter of the matron). All of them are currently undergoing treatment at Jeypore District Hospital.
As per hostel superintendent Dinabandhu Kushparia, last Friday at around 5 p.m., seven students from class 10 experienced stomach pain and loose motions and were admitted to Kundura Community Health Centre. They recovered and returned to the hostel. On Saturday, three more students were taken to Jeypore Medical College for treatment and were discharged after recovery.
However, again this morning, the above-mentioned 13 students had to be admitted to Jeypore Medical College due to a recurrence of symptoms.
When contacted, BDO Sujnan Ranjan Jali stated that initially, only students from classes 9 and 10 were affected. After returning to the hostel from the hospital, the illness appears to have spread to other students. These two classes (9th and 10th) are the only ones residing in the hostel, while they attend classes at Ananta Vidyapeeth, which is nearly 2 km away from the hostel.
He also mentioned that the hygiene and sanitation inside the hostel are well-maintained. It is suspected that the students might have consumed some food outside or on their way to school, which could have caused the infection.
Upon receiving the information, local MLA Rupu Bhatara visited the hostel to review the situation personally.
