Ratnagiri, part of the ‘Diamond Triangle’ Buddhist circuit along with Lalitgiri and Udayagiri, is known for its historical significance. Unlike other Buddhist sites in the region, Ratnagiri’s main assembly hall remains buried underground. The initial excavation will focus on the rear portion of the Mahakal Temple, with hopes of uncovering the main worship hall.

The excavation is expected to proceed in phases over an extended period. Gadnayak also mentioned that additional support facilities, including drinking water and restrooms, will be provided to accommodate workers and researchers at the site.

Ratnagiri has a rich archaeological history, with more than 3,000 artifacts discovered since ASI began excavations in 1958. These include votive stupas, seals, and inscriptions identifying Ratnagiri as an ancient Buddhist university. The renewed excavation efforts are expected to offer further insights into the region’s significant Buddhist heritage and its role in ancient Indian education.
