Flood Fury Turns Homes Into Rubble: 20 Families Homeless In Odisha’s Kandhamal, Connectivity Hit

Kandhamal, Nov 4 (UDN): Their homes are gone, belongings have been swept away and an uncertain future lies ahead. In Indragarh village under Raikia block of Odisha’s Kandhamal district, the devastating floods triggered by Cyclone Arnab have left a trail of destruction, forcing more than 20 families to seek shelter in a school building.

Although floodwaters from the Rushikulya River have begun to recede, the misery of the affected villagers is far from over. Several houses have been completely washed away, while others remain buried beneath thick layers of mud, stones and debris.

For families who had spent years building their homes and accumulating their belongings, the disaster has turned a lifetime of hard work into rubble within hours.

With little left to salvage, the displaced residents are now struggling to come to terms with the loss of their homes and livelihoods.

“We had never imagined that a flood could cause such devastation. Our houses have been destroyed. Where will we go now? We have nowhere else to turn,” said a distressed villager.

Sudden Flood Surge Leaves Residents With Nothing

Recalling the terrifying moments when floodwaters suddenly entered the village, resident Bishnupriya Goud said there was hardly any time to collect household belongings or valuables.

“We could not even manage to take our belongings out of our houses. The floodwaters swept everything away. We somehow managed to save our lives by reaching the shelter home,” she said.

The school building has become a temporary refuge for the affected families, many of whom escaped with only the clothes they were wearing.

The district administration has reportedly been providing cooked food and relief assistance to the displaced residents over the past week. However, temporary relief has not eased their concerns about permanent rehabilitation and rebuilding their destroyed homes.

Essential Supplies Become Expensive, Healthcare Access Affected

Beyond the loss of shelter, the floods have created additional hardships for residents struggling to meet their daily needs.

Disruption in transportation and access to nearby markets has reportedly pushed up the prices of essential commodities, with vegetable prices nearly doubling, according to local residents.

Access to medicines and healthcare services has also become difficult, adding to the concerns of families already grappling with the aftermath of the disaster.

For the displaced villagers, restoring normal life will require more than immediate food assistance. They need sustained support, essential supplies and a clear rehabilitation plan.

Floodwaters Damage Bridge, Disrupt Kandhamal-Ganjam Connectivity

The impact of the flooding has extended beyond Indragarh’s residential areas. Powerful currents submerged a bridge connecting Kandhamal and Ganjam districts, disrupting road communication and affecting movement between the two regions.

As the water level receded, the bridge and its approaches were left covered with thick mud, uprooted trees and accumulated debris.

Fire Services personnel have been deployed to clear the obstruction and restore connectivity. Several enormous trees, reportedly measuring around 25 to 27 feet in length, were swept away by the floodwaters and became lodged near the bridge.

“We are trying our best to remove the huge trees and clear the bridge at the earliest. Some of the trees washed away by the floodwaters are around 25 to 27 feet long,” said Fire Services personnel Nilamadhav Subudhi.

Meanwhile, road clearance and restoration operations are continuing on a priority basis to reconnect affected areas and gradually bring life back to normal.

A Long Road To Recovery

Even as rescue and restoration efforts continue, the people of Indragarh face the much bigger challenge of rebuilding their lives.

For the more than 20 affected families, the immediate concern is finding a permanent roof over their heads and recovering from the devastating loss of their homes and possessions.

The receding waters may signal the end of the immediate flood threat, but for the residents of Indragarh, the real struggle is only beginning. Their return to normal life will depend on sustained administrative support, rehabilitation measures and the restoration of essential infrastructure.
