Brahmapur, Sept 4 (UDN): A fire triggered by a suspected gas leak broke out at the boys’ hostel of the Nursing College inside the MKCG Medical College and Hospital campus in Brahmapur on Friday, prompting a swift emergency response and raising fresh concerns over fire safety at the institution.
According to preliminary information, the incident occurred in the hostel kitchen on the ground floor, where a leak in a gas pipeline is suspected to have ignited the blaze. Students reportedly detected the smell of leaking gas and immediately alerted the fire services.
A fire brigade team reached the campus soon after receiving the call and brought the flames under control before the fire could spread further.
Officials said no injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.
Safety concerns resurface
The incident has once again drawn attention to fire-safety preparedness at one of Odisha’s largest government medical institutions. Concerns have been raised over the condition of firefighting infrastructure on the campus, with reports suggesting that some safety equipment may require replacement or maintenance.
MKCG Medical College and Hospital serves as a major referral healthcare centre for southern Odisha, catering to patients from multiple districts. The latest fire has renewed calls for a comprehensive review of emergency response systems, including regular inspections of gas lines, firefighting equipment and hostel safety protocols.
Authorities are expected to examine the cause of the fire and assess whether additional safety measures are required to prevent similar incidents in the future.
