Heavy Rain Alert in Odisha: IMD Warns of Widespread Showers and Thunderstorms Till September 4
Bhubaneswar, 1st September, 2025 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather advisory for Odisha, forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall across several districts of the state due to the influence of a cyclonic circulation and active monsoon trough.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, the state has been experiencing continuous rainfall over the past few days, with Phiringia in Kandhamal district recording the highest rainfall of 12.5 cm in the last 24 hours.
A new low-pressure area is expected to form over the northwestern Bay of Bengal by September 2, which is likely to further intensify the rainfall activity across the state, particularly in southern Odisha. The impact is expected to last until September 4, 2025.
Districts Likely to Be Affected
On Monday (September 1) and over the next 48 hours, moderate to heavy rainfall with isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30–40 km/h) are likely in the following districts:
Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Koraput, Baleswar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Nayagarh, Khurda, Puri, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, and Boudh.
Isolated areas in Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Koraput may experience very heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and strong surface winds.
Sea Conditions and Advisory for Fishermen
The IMD has also warned that sea conditions will remain rough due to strong winds and convective activity. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea from September 2 to September 4, especially in the coastal and deep-sea regions of the Bay of Bengal.
Public Advisory
- Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas should remain alert.
- Avoid travel during periods of heavy rain and lightning.
- Keep electronic devices unplugged during lightning.
- Follow updates issued by the IMD and local authorities.
Preparedness
District administrations have been alerted to take necessary precautions. The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has activated control rooms and instructed emergency response teams to remain on standby, particularly in vulnerable areas.
