INR 802.9 Cr Approved for Cuttack-Nirgundi Rail Line and Flyover

Cuttack, July 12, 2025 – In a significant push to strengthen Odisha’s railway network, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has approved a major infrastructure project worth ₹802.9 crore. The project includes the construction of a fourth railway line between Cuttack and Nirgundi (15.99 km) and a dedicated railway flyover at Nirgundi, aimed at easing congestion and improving rail traffic efficiency.

This development is part of the broader modernization of the Howrah–Chennai main line, one of India’s busiest and most vital rail corridors. The Cuttack–Nirgundi section serves as a key link within the high-density Eastern railway network, particularly for traffic to and from the Paradeep Port.

Easing Congestion, Improving Efficiency

Due to the heavy traffic volume, particularly at the crossing point of the Paradeep-bound freight and passenger trains on the main line, this corridor currently experiences frequent delays. Moreover, the absence of a direct junction arrangement for Talcher-bound trains at Cuttack often leads to delays due to level crossings.

The approved fourth line and the new flyover are strategically planned to segregate port traffic from regular passenger trains, especially between Cuttack and Dhenkanal. This will reduce congestion, improve punctuality, and allow smoother operation of both passenger and freight trains.

Key Project Features

  • Dual river bridges will be constructed over the Mahanadi and Birupa rivers as part of the new line.
  • The project includes 2×25 kV electrification, allowing train speeds of up to 130 km/h.
  • It will be equipped with the KAVACH automatic train protection system for enhanced safety.
  • The railway flyover at Nirgundi will eliminate time-consuming crossing delays for express trains.

Strategic Benefits

The new infrastructure will help minimize delays by bypassing bottlenecks, reduce conflicts between long-distance express and freight services, and improve overall train punctuality. Additionally, it supports Indian Railways’ broader objective of increasing capacity and efficiency along one of its most heavily utilized routes.

This project is a critical step in the East Coast Railway’s long-term efforts to enhance operational capabilities and modernize its railway assets—ensuring better service for both freight movement and passenger comfort.
