Baripada, June 25 (UDN): A unique blend of love, faith and indigenous traditions came to the fore in Mainsiduba village under Kaptipada police limits in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, where an interfaith couple solemnised their marriage after the bride underwent customary induction rituals prescribed by the local tribal community.
According to sources, Ratan Soren, son of Pandu Soren and a resident of Mainsiduba village, met Janaki Hansda while working at a private company in Bhubaneswar. Their friendship eventually blossomed into a relationship, and the couple later decided to get married.
After returning to Ratan’s native village, the couple reportedly received the consent of their family members for the marriage. However, during discussions, villagers came to know that Janaki belonged to a different faith.
Subsequently, village elders convened a meeting and decided that the marriage would be solemnised in accordance with local customs only after Janaki formally embraced the Santali faith through traditional community rituals.
Agreeing to the customs, Janaki participated in a series of ceremonial rites symbolising her induction into the tribal religious tradition. The rituals included customary purification ceremonies, symbolic rebirth practices and worship of the village deity. Offerings comprising chickens, a goat, traditional Handia and other customary items were made as part of the community observances.
Following the completion of the rituals, Janaki was formally accepted by the community, after which the marriage was solemnised in the presence of family members and villagers as per Santali traditions.
Village head Jagdish Murmu said the rituals were performed in keeping with long-standing community practices and with the consent of both families. A community feast was also organised after the ceremonies.
The incident has drawn attention in the region, highlighting the intersection of interfaith relationships, community traditions and customary practices in rural tribal society.
