Jharsuguda Sizzles: Odisha Town Ranks as World’s Second Hottest City

22nd April 2025, Bhubaneswar: Odisha is currently in the grip of an intense heatwave, with soaring temperatures causing widespread discomfort across the state. On a scorching day recently, Jharsuguda stood out for recording a searing 45.4°C, earning it the title of the second hottest city in the world, according to the latest data from the Indian Meteorological Department.

Residents experienced extreme heat right from the morning, with streets nearly deserted as people avoided going outdoors. By midday, the sun was unforgiving, and the heat became almost unbearable.

India, as a whole, saw eight of its cities listed among the world’s hottest. Apart from Jharsuguda, cities like Chandrapur, Brahmapuri, Amravati, Sidhi, Rajnandgaon, Prayagraj, and Akola also reported dangerously high temperatures, underlining the widespread nature of the heatwave.

Early the next morning, the heat showed no signs of relenting. Jharsuguda and Sambalpur both reported 34.8°C, while Cuttack recorded 33.6°C and Bhubaneswar touched 32°C even before 9 AM.

Health officials and weather authorities have urged the public to take precautions—stay indoors during peak hours, drink plenty of fluids, and avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun. With the heatwave expected to continue, the public is advised to remain alert and follow safety guidelines.
