Justice Served: Legal Aid Initiative Frees Life Convict in Nabarangpur

Nabarangpur, 4th Aug 2025:  A life convict named Mr. Dulu Harijan, aged 74, who had spent 18 years in the Nabarangpur Sub-Jail, has been released early due to the intervention of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Nabarangpur.

During a visit to the Nabarangpur Sub-Jail, officials from the District Legal Services Authority came across Mr. Harijan’s case. After learning about his prolonged imprisonment, District Judge and DLSA Chairman Shri Subrat Mahanti held discussions and took initiative for his early release.

As per the directive of the Chairman, a request was made to the Director of Prisons, Bhubaneswar, to consider Mr. Harijan’s case for early release. Subsequently, his name was placed before the 46th State Sentence Review Board, which convened on 17/05/2025. The Board discussed the matter and unanimously approved his early release.

Following this, on 19/07/2025, the Deputy Secretary of the Law Department, Odisha, officially issued orders to release Mr. Dulu Harijan, who had been serving a life sentence.

After his release, efforts were made to return him home. However, due to a lack of immediate acceptance by his relatives, he was temporarily accommodated in Tentukunti village under Nirmal Akash Bruddhashram (an elderly care home).

On the directive of District Judge Shri Subrat Mahanti, Para Legal Volunteer Hareish Harijan was assigned the task of counseling the family members and facilitating Mr. Harijan’s reintegration with his family.

Finally, under the direct supervision of the Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Nabarangpur, Mr. Dulu Harijan was released into the care of his family members.
