7th March 2025: Nestled in the serene forests of Debagarh, Kurudakot Waterfall has long been a symbol of natural beauty and historical significance. Once a pioneering hydroelectric project, it powered local cities and sparked innovation in the early 20th century. However, over the years, the waterfall’s flow has dwindled, primarily due to deforestation and environmental degradation.
The waterfall, once a vital resource for electricity generation, now provides water for irrigation and drinking. Despite its historical importance, efforts to revive its former glory have stalled, with only a survey conducted by the Odisha Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC) and no further action.
Local communities and environmentalists are concerned about the ongoing decline. They suggest that collecting rainwater during the monsoon could help restore the waterfall’s flow, but the future remains uncertain. Kurudakot is not just a scenic site but a reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human development.
