Long-Pending Demand of Residents Fulfilled as Koraput Bypass Road Approved for Widening into a Modern Four-Lane Corridor

Koraput, June 16: A new wave of hope has emerged regarding the long-pending Koraput Bypass Road project, a longstanding demand of the town’s residents. While the project was initially planned as a two-lane road, the proposal has now been revised to construct a four-lane bypass. The project is estimated to cost around ₹500 crore.

A joint inspection by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Railway Department has already been completed. According to Koraput Municipality Chairperson Lalat Ranjan Sethi, the project will move forward after the completion of land acquisition procedures. The announcement has brought considerable excitement among the residents of Koraput.
Mr. Sethi stated that the joint survey of the proposed bypass route by NHAI and the Railway Department has been completed. Following the completion of the field survey by the local revenue administration (Tahasildar’s office), the land acquisition process will begin. The estimated cost of the project is expected to be approximately ₹500 crore.

At present, hundreds of heavy vehicles pass through Koraput town every day while traveling to and from places such as Jayapur, Visakhapatnam, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, and Malkangiri. As a result, traffic congestion within the town has increased significantly, along with the risk of road accidents.

Particularly, areas such as RTO Chhak, Jail Chhak, the Medical College zone, and other locations along the National Highway have become major traffic bottlenecks. With the town’s population and number of vehicles growing rapidly, the existing road infrastructure is under increasing pressure.

Experts believe that the construction of the bypass road will reduce the entry of heavy vehicles into the town center, thereby easing traffic congestion and lowering the incidence of accidents. In addition, the project is expected to strengthen tourism, trade, and regional connectivity in and around Koraput.

Mr. Sethi further emphasized that the State Government and the concerned departments should act promptly to implement this much-awaited project. Once completed, the bypass road is expected to provide a long-term solution to Koraput’s traffic problems.
