Monsoon Pause in Odisha: Rain Delay Likely to Last 10 Days

2nd June 2025: The Southwest Monsoon, which arrived earlier than usual over Kerala on May 24 and progressed into parts of Odisha by May 28, has now temporarily stalled. According to weather officials, this monsoon break is expected to continue for around 10 more days, delaying widespread rainfall across the state.

This interruption is due to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which diverted moisture-laden winds and pulled in dry air from the northeast. As a result, monsoon advancement has slowed, and many regions of Odisha are experiencing rising temperatures, humid conditions, and frequent lightning.

The break could impact farming activities, water availability, and public health, particularly if the dry spell extends further. High temperatures and lack of cloud cover could lead to increased heat stress and unfavorable conditions for crop sowing.

Such monsoon pauses have occurred in the past as well. In 2009, Odisha saw a similar delay when the monsoon halted for nearly three weeks following a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal.

Weather experts anticipate that monsoon activity may resume in mid-June. Until then, the public and farmers are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions against the heat.
