Bhubaneswar, June 12: The southwest monsoon has become active over Odisha, bringing widespread rainfall and much-needed relief from the recent heatwave. Light to moderate rain has been recorded in districts such as Bhubaneswar, Puri, Ganjam, and Nayagarh, offering a break from the hot and humid weather.
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has stated that moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal are contributing to the rainfall, which is expected to intensify in the coming days. As a result, daytime temperatures across the state are likely to drop by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius.
Cloudy skies and scattered showers, along with occasional lightning and thunder, have been observed in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. Weather conditions are expected to remain similar in the near future.
An orange alert has been issued for seven districts—Kandhamal, Boudh, Angul, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj—warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall within the next 24 hours. Thunderstorms and winds reaching speeds of 40–50 km/h may also affect these areas.
Additionally, yellow alerts have been announced for 19 other districts, forecasting light to moderate rain.
Meteorologists have linked the increased monsoon activity to a low-pressure area and cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal. This year, the monsoon reached Odisha nearly 10 days ahead of the usual schedule, according to the Met office.
Rainfall is expected to continue over the next few days, and residents in the affected districts are advised to remain alert and follow weather-related advisories issued by authorities.
