The ambitious initiative aims to establish Odisha’s first green hydrogen ecosystem for urban mobility, reinforcing the state’s commitment to adopting innovative clean energy solutions and reducing carbon emissions.

A high-level review meeting chaired by Additional Chief Secretary of the Housing and Urban Development Department, Usha Padhee, assessed the project’s progress and addressed key operational, financial, and regulatory aspects. The project is being jointly implemented by Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT), NTPC, and GRIDCO.

The review focused on developments since the signing of the tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) among the three organisations. The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and supports the nation’s broader goal of achieving net-zero emissions through the adoption of indigenous clean fuel technologies.

As part of the pilot phase, a Green Hydrogen Production and Refuelling Facility will be established at CRUT’s Pokhariput Depot in Bhubaneswar. The project will also see the deployment of three Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Buses, marking a major milestone in Odisha’s clean mobility journey.

The proposed facility is expected to produce approximately 260 kilograms of green hydrogen daily. Under ideal conditions, the hydrogen-powered buses will be capable of operating up to 600 kilometres per day, offering a reliable and environmentally friendly public transport solution.

Beyond improving urban mobility, the project is expected to significantly reduce environmental impact by eliminating tailpipe emissions and cutting nearly 900 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

The Green Hydrogen Mobility Project underscores Odisha’s vision of building a sustainable transport network while positioning the state as a frontrunner in the adoption of next-generation clean energy technologies.
