Odisha Government to Print Official Map in Odia Language

Bhubaneswar, 4th Aug 2025: For the first time, the Government of India will print the map of Odisha in the Odia language. The Survey of India (SOI) has sent a letter to the Chief Secretary informing about this initiative of publishing maps in regional languages. Along with this letter, the State Government has been requested to send two officers proficient in Odia to assist in this task.

The letter from the Survey of India (SOI) mentions that maps are usually published in English or Hindi. However, to promote awareness about Odisha among students, academicians, and the general public, it has now been decided to prepare the Odisha map in the Odia language.

The names of places on the map will be written in accurate Odia, and other texts will also be translated correctly. For this purpose, the Odisha Government has been asked to recommend one officer and one language expert from institutions like Utkal University or Ramadevi University who have proficiency in the Odia language.

The Director of SOI in Bhubaneswar will act as the nodal officer for this work.

The map will highlight the state’s geographical and administrative features, including district boundaries and important cultural landmarks.

As per the directions of the Chief Secretary, the Commerce and Transport Department has been asked to nominate an officer from the Odia Language and Culture Department, and steps are being taken to appoint an Odia professor from a university for this purpose.
