Odisha Plans World-Class Infrastructure to Position Chilika as a Global Tourism Destination

Bhubaneswar, July 31 (UDN): The Odisha government has initiated discussions on a comprehensive infrastructure development plan aimed at transforming the Chilika region into a world-class tourism destination while preserving its rich ecological and cultural heritage.

A high-level meeting held at the Government Residence Conference Hall in Bhubaneswar reviewed strategies to unlock Chilika’s vast tourism potential through improved connectivity, modern infrastructure and enhanced visitor amenities.

The deliberations focused on strengthening road connectivity, developing tourism infrastructure, upgrading public facilities and creating a sustainable tourism ecosystem that would attract both domestic and international visitors. Participants also discussed measures to promote Chilika’s unique natural beauty, biodiversity and cultural significance while ensuring balanced development and environmental conservation.

The meeting further explored initiatives to boost the local economy by creating employment opportunities, encouraging community participation and supporting tourism-driven livelihoods in and around the Chilika region.

Senior officials from the Works Department, including Chief Engineer (Roads-II) Er. Shivabrata Taria and Additional Chief Engineer (Roads-II) Er. Rashmiranjan Sahu, attended the meeting. Renowned actor Sabyasachi Mishra, Padma Shri Adwaita Charan Gadanayak, former Director General of the National Gallery of Modern Art, along with officials from the consultant team, also participated in the discussions and shared their perspectives on developing Chilika as a premier tourism hub.

Officials said the proposed infrastructure initiatives are expected to significantly improve accessibility, strengthen tourism facilities and enhance visitor experience, while contributing to the state’s vision of building a Viksit Odisha through sustainable and inclusive development.

The government reiterated its commitment to developing Chilika into an internationally acclaimed tourism destination by integrating world-class infrastructure with environmental stewardship and local economic growth.
