Bhubaneswar, Sept. 16 (UDN): Odisha has witnessed one of its more active monsoon seasons this year, with 11 low-pressure areas developing since June 1, contributing to rainfall that is 21 per cent above the seasonal average, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The state has received 1,269.7 mm of rainfall during the period, reflecting a healthy monsoon performance overall. However, the distribution has not been uniform, with Gajapati and Nabarangapur remaining the only two districts to record deficient rainfall.
Monsoon withdrawal likely in October
The IMD said atmospheric conditions are gradually becoming favourable for the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon. The retreat is expected to begin over parts of western Rajasthan around September 19 before advancing across northwest India in phases.
If current weather patterns continue, the monsoon is likely to withdraw from Odisha by the second week of October.
Bay circulation to bring more rain
A cyclonic circulation persists over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas, and its influence is expected to bring light to moderate rainfall across different parts of Odisha over the next two days.
IMD dismisses rumours of multiple cyclones
The weather agency has also rejected recent reports claiming that three cyclones are expected to form over the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea between October and December.
The IMD clarified that it has not issued any such forecast, stressing that no official prediction supports the claims circulating in some media reports.
Officials said weather models are being monitored continuously and assured that any significant development over the Bay of Bengal or the Arabian Sea will be communicated through official forecasts and advisories.
