19th February 2025: Textile Minister Giriraj Singh announced plans to increase the income of handloom weavers in India from ₹20,000 to ₹25,000 per month, with both central and state governments working together to achieve this goal.
Singh revealed that Odisha will be developed as the country’s silk hub, with 29 of its 30 districts involved in silk production. The state has 3.5 lakh artisans and weavers, and the government aims to make Odisha the largest silk producer in India. Additionally, one district will be selected to focus on textile development and tourism promotion.
Singh also highlighted the Union Budget’s boost to Odisha, with increased railway allocations and the expansion of air connectivity. The Centre will fund the development of key tourist destinations like the Hirakud reservoir and Satkosia, further enhancing the state’s economic growth.
