Expanding and Modernising Public Transport
Public transport in Odisha is undergoing significant expansion under the AMA Bus programme, which now operates 670 buses across the state, including 220 electric buses. With electric services planned for six additional cities, the state is broadening its clean-energy mobility network and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Currently, the AMA fleet serves passengers across 113 routes and 1,399 kilometres, bridging major mobility gaps and improving last-mile connectivity in urban and peri-urban regions. Continuous route expansion is underway to support urban growth and ensure seamless movement for all citizens.
Promoting Digital Access and Inclusive Mobility
Odisha has introduced several incentives to increase public transport usage and make mobility more inclusive.
-
Digital ticketing discounts have encouraged commuters to shift to online systems.
-
Fare concessions for women, aimed at promoting equitable access, have widened the passenger base.
Together, these measures have contributed to a 35% rise in ticketing revenue, signalling growing trust and adoption of public transport.
Significance of Hosting UMI 2026
Hosting the 19th UMI Summit positions Odisha as an emerging hub of urban mobility innovation.
The 2026 Summit is expected to:
-
bring national and global experts to the state,
-
showcase best practices in sustainable transport,
-
facilitate collaboration on smart city mobility,
-
strengthen policy frameworks for e-mobility, and
-
highlight Odisha’s progress as a leader in clean, accessible and commuter-friendly transport.
With increasing adoption of electric buses, passenger-centric services, and a steadily expanding route network, Odisha is moving towards a smarter, greener and more inclusive mobility future.
