Puri Braces for Rath Yatra 2026 as Heavy Rainfall Triggers Safety Alert

Puri, July 15 (UDN): Puri is witnessing challenging weather conditions ahead of Rath Yatra 2026, with heavy rainfall recorded just a day before the grand festival. The downpour has prompted weather authorities to issue safety guidelines for the lakhs of devotees expected to gather in the city.

The Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar reported 143.8 mm of rainfall in Puri during the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am on July 15. The city also experienced thunderstorm activity during the period, raising concerns over slippery roads, crowd management, and safety arrangements during the festival.

The latest weather update has forecast cloudy skies with light to moderate rain and possible thunderstorms in Puri. Temperatures are expected to remain between 27°C and 29°C, while high humidity levels may continue to add to the discomfort for visitors.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has urged pilgrims to stay alert and follow safety precautions during the festival. Devotees have been advised to move to safe shelters during lightning, heavy rain, or strong winds and avoid taking shelter under trees, electric poles, or temporary structures.

Authorities have also recommended wearing non-slip footwear and exercising caution on wet surfaces, particularly along the Grand Road (Bada Danda), the main route of the Rath Yatra procession. Visitors have been advised to stay hydrated, keep communication devices charged, and monitor official weather updates.

Special precautions have been suggested for elderly devotees, children, and people with medical conditions to avoid prolonged exposure to rain and crowded areas. Authorities are continuing preparations to ensure the festival proceeds smoothly while prioritising the safety of devotees.
