27th February 2025: The Rishikulya river mouth in Ganjam district has gained international recognition for its rich biodiversity. Known for attracting various marine species and migratory birds, it has become a key ecological site.

The area is especially famous for being the largest nesting ground for the rare Olive Ridley turtles. Every year, these turtles gather to lay their eggs, drawing attention from around the world. Additionally, the river mouth is home to the Bar-headed goose, which migrates to the region during winter.

Recent observations have also identified 13 Humpback dolphins in the area, further highlighting its importance. The river’s changing water flow leads to the formation of new sandbars, which contribute to its diverse ecosystem.

The state government is planning to set up a research center in the region to better understand and protect its marine life. Rishikulya’s river mouth remains a vital site for both local and migratory species.
