Sambalpur Reels Under Relentless Heavy Rainfall as Hirakud Dam Prepares to Release the First Floodwater of the Year on July 9

Sambalpur, July 7 {UDN}:  Continuous heavy rainfall has severely affected normal life in Sambalpur, with several low-lying areas facing waterlogging and rising river levels. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged residents to remain alert.

In view of the increasing inflow into the Hirakud Reservoir, the first floodwater of the year will be released from the Hirakud Dam on July 9 by opening selected sluice gates. The release is being carried out as a precautionary measure to maintain the reservoir’s safe water level.

The administration has issued advisories for people living downstream to avoid venturing near the riverbanks and to follow official instructions. Disaster management teams are on standby to respond to any emergency arising from the floodwater release.
