Nabarangpur, 19th Aug 2025: The drainage system of Nabarangpur town has not improved for decades, causing waterlogging in half of the city whenever it rains. To resolve this, a plan has been made to construct 73 km of drains and 47 outlets for wastewater and rainwater disposal. The survey work has been completed, and the process of preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently underway.
Although the Nabarangpur Municipality was formed 71 years ago, no long-term drainage project has ever been prioritized. The 17-ward municipality has fragmented drainage systems across different colonies and streets, but there is no comprehensive system for wastewater or rainwater disposal. Many of the existing drains are blocked with silt, some overflow onto the roads, and in many areas, there are no drains at all.
The situation is worse around key government offices such as the District Collector’s Office, SP Office, and District Headquarters Hospital, where waterlogging is common. Despite enjoying services like streetlights and sanitation from the municipality, many households, businesses, and hotels in these areas do not pay holding tax, as they are technically marked under rural panchayats on paper.
To address this, the municipality has planned the new 73 km drainage network with 47 outlets connecting to the main drain. The DPR will be sent to the government for approval once finalized. Municipality Chairperson Kunu Nayak said that after submission, efforts will be made with the Urban Development Minister and Secretary for early approval. Local MLA Shri Majhi also assured that he will personally take steps for the project’s clearance.
