New Delhi, July 7: The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has granted environmental clearance to two major power projects in Odisha, marking a key step forward in the state’s energy sector.
The first approval has been given to NLC India Ltd for the second phase expansion of the Talabira Thermal Power Project, raising its generation capacity from 2,400 MW to 3,200 MW. The plant, located near coal mines, is an ultra-supercritical thermal power project, and the development rights have been secured by BHEL, a leading public sector enterprise.
The second clearance goes to GMR Power’s expansion project, which plans to add 350 MW to its existing 1,050 MW capacity in Odisha. The company has proposed to use imported coal for this expansion.
A proposal by NTPC Ltd for the expansion of the Darlipali Super Thermal Power Project was also discussed in the expert committee meeting held on June 20. However, the application was sent back for revision in the Terms of Reference (ToR), with instructions to reapply after necessary updates.
These clearances are expected to boost electricity production, support industrial growth, and meet the increasing power demand in the region.
