Voices Emerge Over the Gradual Disappearance of ‘Bhagabata Tungi’ and Its Cultural Significance in Rural Society

Bhagabanagar, June 3:: Times have changed, and so have lifestyles. Along with that, many traditions have slowly begun to fade away over time. One such tradition is the Bhagabata Tungi. There was a time when it played a very important role in creating spiritual awakening and positive thinking in society. After daily work was over, people from all age groups—children to the elderly—would gather at the Bhagabata Tungi. Regular recitation of the Bhagabata would take place there, and people would listen with great interest.
But now times have changed. Earlier, such gatherings used to be common in villages, but now the spiritual atmosphere in Bhagabata Tungis is no longer seen as before. Due to the influence of modernity, people have increasingly moved away from television as well, and the use of the internet and mobile phones has grown significantly. In villages, instead of Bhagabata Tungi, a different form of entertainment can now be seen during festivals and religious occasions. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Bhagabata Tungis across the Bhanjanagar subdivision are on the verge of losing their existence.

However, in some villages, Bhagabata Tungis still exist, where various religious rituals are performed along with Bhagabata discussions. A few years ago, the government had initiated efforts to revive and preserve traditional culture and heritage. Old Bhagabata Tungis were identified and financial assistance was provided for their maintenance. But how effective these efforts have been still needs proper evaluation. In such a situation, the BJP government has also started initiatives for the revival of Bhagabata Tungis. However, only time will tell whether these plans will be implemented effectively or not.

The Bhagabata contains deep life philosophy in every verse, which is not an exaggeration to say. The Bhagabata Tungi was considered a meeting place of literature, organization, culture, and religious faith in the village. But at present, under the influence of Western culture, it is on the verge of losing its identity. Although efforts were made in the past for its development, their impact has not been very significant.

The Bhagabata Tungi used to serve as a place of worship for everyone. It was not only a place for religious discussions, but also a venue where village elders held meetings, delivered justice in local disputes, and resolved issues. According to senior citizens, it was also used for organizing community activities, family education, and discussions on social reforms. This created a strong spiritual and positive environment in the village, which discouraged antisocial activities. The recitation of the Bhagabata promoted unity and brotherhood among people. It is being suggested that the government should take more active steps for the revival of Bhagabata Tungis.
