Bhubaneswar, April 21, 2025 – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Odisha, predicting a sharp rise in temperatures, particularly in the western regions of the state. According to the forecast, mercury levels may soar to 45 degrees Celsius on April 24 and 25.
After a brief respite due to Kalbaisakhi-induced thunderstorms and rain, the heat has made a strong comeback. On Sunday, many cities in western Odisha already recorded temperatures above 40°C, with the IMD expecting conditions to intensify in the coming days.
The department warned that temperatures could rise by another 4°C, worsening the ongoing heatwave. Cities in western Odisha are likely to experience scorching conditions, with several areas projected to cross 44°C. As of Monday, ten locations across the state are expected to report temperatures over 40°C.
There is no significant possibility of thunderstorms or rainfall until April 26, reducing hopes of relief from the extreme heat. The IMD also noted that Kalbaisakhi activity might resume by April 26, but until then, residents are advised to take precautions against the soaring temperatures.
