5th June 2025: World Environment Day, observed every year on June 5, is the world’s biggest platform for environmental awareness and action. In 2025, the focus is on one of the most urgent issues we face: plastic pollution. Under the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution”, this year’s campaign calls for a united global effort to tackle the growing crisis of plastic waste.

Every year, over 11 million tonnes of plastic end up in oceans, rivers, and lakes—posing a threat to wildlife, ecosystems, and human health. This year’s message is clear: it’s time to rethink how we produce, use, and dispose of plastic. The #BeatPlasticPollution campaign encourages individuals, communities, and governments to act—by reducing single-use plastics, improving recycling, and supporting sustainable alternatives.

South Korea, known for its innovative environmental practices, is hosting the 2025 celebration on Jeju Island. The island has already made strides in reducing plastic waste, including launching a deposit system for disposable cups and aiming for zero plastic pollution by 2040.
