Nabarangpur, July 2 {UDN}: The 20th National Statistics Day-2026 was celebrated at the district level in Nabarangpur to mark the birth anniversary of renowned statistician Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis (P.C. Mahalanobis). The programme highlighted the crucial role of statistics in nation-building, policy formulation, and evidence-based governance.
The event was inaugurated by Dr. Jayanti Mala Nayak, Deputy Director (Planning and Statistics), who welcomed the guests and participants. Speaking on the occasion, she emphasized that statistics play a vital role in monitoring government schemes, collecting and analysing socio-economic indicators, evaluating development programmes, and supporting informed decision-making.
Assistant Director Aishwarya Bhanj explained the importance of statistical data at the district level, stating that accurate and reliable information enables governments to understand the real needs of people and formulate effective development policies. He also encouraged students and young people to develop an interest in statistics and adopt a data-driven approach to problem-solving and policymaking.
As part of the National Statistics Day celebrations, the Model Degree College, Nabarangpur organised quiz and essay competitions. A large number of students enthusiastically participated, showcasing their knowledge, analytical abilities, and creativity in the field of statistics.
The winners of the competitions were felicitated with certificates and prizes during the programme. The event witnessed the participation of officials from the Planning and Statistics Department, students, academicians, representatives of non-governmental organisations, and professionals associated with the field of statistics.
The celebration concluded with a renewed commitment to strengthening the use of quality statistical data for transparent governance, sustainable development, and informed public policy, while inspiring the younger generation to appreciate the growing significance of statistics in national progress.
