Bhubaneswar, Aug. 5 (UDN): The Odisha government has rolled out an AI-based traffic enforcement system on four major national highways, marking a significant step towards improving road safety and ensuring stricter compliance with traffic regulations.

The intelligent surveillance network, operational since August 1, uses Artificial Intelligence-enabled cameras to automatically detect traffic violations, including riding two-wheelers without helmets, driving without seat belts and overspeeding. Violators will receive e-challans under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The AI cameras have been installed along four key highway corridors—Manguli–Sambalpur, Sambalpur–Raipur, Berhampur–Bhanjanagar, and Bhanjanagar–Taptapani—covering some of the state’s busiest road stretches.
Transport officials said the system will function round the clock, enabling real-time monitoring and automated enforcement without manual intervention. The initiative is aimed at reducing road accidents by encouraging motorists to adhere to traffic rules.
The Regional Transport Office (RTO) will continuously monitor the surveillance network while simultaneously conducting public awareness campaigns to familiarise commuters with the new enforcement mechanism.
An Additional Regional Transport Officer said the objective is not merely to issue penalties but to encourage responsible driving. He urged motorists to wear helmets, fasten seat belts and follow speed limits, warning that violations captured by the AI cameras would automatically generate electronic challans.
Meanwhile, some commuters have welcomed the move as a step towards safer highways, while others have stressed the need for improving road infrastructure alongside stricter enforcement. A local resident travelling on NH-55 in Dhenkanal said he was unaware of the AI surveillance system and argued that damaged road stretches should also be addressed to improve overall road safety.
Officials have appealed to commuters using the identified highway stretches to comply with traffic regulations, stating that the AI-enabled system is expected to strengthen enforcement, reduce human intervention and promote safer travel across Odisha’s national highways.
