Crocodile Sightings Spark Concern in Ganjam Village, Forest Department Probes

Ganjam, Oct. 6 (UDN): Concern has gripped Dakshinapur village under Gokarnapur panchayat in Ganjam district after residents claimed that four crocodiles were spotted in a local pond.

According to villagers, the reptiles were noticed in the pond following the release of water through Canal No. 9 from the Ghodahada Dam. They suspect the crocodiles may have been carried into the waterbody through the canal.

Alarmed by the reported sightings, locals informed the Digapahandi Forest Department and urged officials to take immediate steps to verify the presence of the reptiles and ensure the safety of residents.

Forest Officials Visit Village

Following the complaint, Forest Department personnel visited the area and began an inquiry into the reported crocodile sightings.

Local resident Kuresh Reddy said villagers noticed the reptiles in the pond and promptly alerted the authorities, requesting that necessary measures be taken to remove them if their presence is confirmed.

However, the Forest Department has so far found no evidence of crocodiles in the pond.

Digapahandi Ranger Dibyarangan Sahu said officials had not spotted any crocodile during their inspection, while confirming that the department had received information about the alleged sightings.

The Forest Department is continuing its investigation to determine whether crocodiles are actually present in the pond and to establish how the reptiles may have entered the waterbody, if the villagers’ claims are confirmed.

Meanwhile, residents have been urged to remain cautious around the pond until the situation is verified.
