Odisha Governor Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati on Sunday highlighted the central role of education in shaping a just and progressive society, stressing that true success goes beyond professional milestones and material wealth to include ethical conduct, civic responsibility and service to the community.
Speaking at a school function in Kaniha, Angul district, the Governor said education must not be viewed merely as a pathway to employment, but as a powerful instrument for character-building and social transformation. He urged students to uphold values such as discipline, dedication and integrity, which, he said, remain essential for nation-building in an increasingly complex world.
Dr Kambhampati noted that institutions with a strong moral foundation have the ability to create socially conscious citizens who contribute positively to democracy and development. “Education should cultivate empathy, responsibility and leadership, alongside academic excellence,” he observed.
Reflecting on the history of the institution, the Governor described it as a significant educational landmark in the region. He recalled that the school was established by eminent freedom fighter and former Deputy Chief Minister of Odisha, late Pabitra Mohan Pradhan, during a period when educational opportunities in the region were scarce. According to the Governor, Pradhan firmly believed that education was the most effective means to uplift society and empower future generations.
Dr Kambhampati further recalled that the decision to rename the institution in honour of Pabitra Mohan Pradhan, on the initiative of legendary statesman Dr Hare Krushna Mahatab, recognised both the founder’s vision and his enduring contribution to public life. The institution, he said, continues to stand as a reminder of how foresight and public spirit can create lasting social impact.
Highlighting the school’s legacy, the Governor praised its alumni for spreading the institution’s values across Odisha and beyond. He noted that former students have distinguished themselves in diverse fields such as education, public administration, healthcare, science and social service, reinforcing the long-term value of investment in quality schooling.
The Governor also acknowledged the presence of Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan and appreciated his role in upgrading the school to a PM Shri Higher Secondary School under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. He said the upgrade reflects the state and central governments’ shared commitment to strengthening school infrastructure, promoting inclusivity and improving learning outcomes.
Placing the event in a broader policy context, Dr Kambhampati said Odisha’s education reforms are increasingly aligned with the goals of NEP 2020, which emphasises holistic development, experiential learning, vocational exposure and equitable access to education. He added that initiatives such as teacher capacity-building, digital learning platforms and improved school governance are essential for translating policy vision into ground-level impact.
Calling the institution a model of inclusive and community-oriented education, the Governor urged educators, policymakers, alumni and local stakeholders to work collaboratively to further enhance its role as it completes 75 years of service to society. He concluded by stating that Odisha’s educational journey demonstrates how sustained policy support, visionary leadership and community participation can together drive meaningful social transformation.
