Ganjam, Aug. 4 (UDN): What began as a dream to break free from a salaried job has today blossomed into a flourishing floriculture enterprise with an annual turnover of nearly ₹1 crore. The inspiring journey of A. Sanjeev Reddy, a science graduate from Odisha’s Ganjam district, is a story of resilience, calculated risk and unwavering belief in entrepreneurship.
A native of Kalyanpur village, Sanjeev started his professional career in 1995 as a Planning Assistant in a private company. While earning a stable income, he quietly nurtured a larger ambition—to build a business of his own. To prepare for that goal, he pursued a diploma in Business Administration through distance learning and diligently saved a significant portion of his earnings.
In 2000, he made the life-changing decision to resign from his corporate job and venture into farming. His first entrepreneurial attempt was paddy straw mushroom cultivation, but expansion at the wrong time resulted in substantial financial losses. A few years later, he returned to mushroom farming on a larger scale, only to suffer another setback when a cyclone severely damaged his infrastructure.
Instead of giving up, Sanjeev chose to reinvent himself.
His breakthrough came in 2020 when he entered floriculture by cultivating the premium ‘Namoh-108’ (Laxmi Kamal) lotus variety under a technology partnership with the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI), Lucknow. Investing his personal savings, he established lotus cultivation across leased village water bodies and gradually expanded production with additional planting material sourced from Tamil Nadu.
Within months, the lotus farms began yielding flowers, supplying markets in Delhi, Kolkata, Ludhiana and other major cities. Seasonal demand, particularly during festivals, significantly boosted returns and encouraged him to diversify further.
In 2023, Sanjeev expanded into African marigold cultivation, leasing additional farmland and steadily increasing production. The flowers now cater to religious events, weddings and wholesale markets, with prices rising sharply during festive seasons.
Committed to sustainable agriculture, he relies on natural farming techniques and prepares organic formulations such as Jeevamruta, Bijamruta and Agniastra to nourish crops and manage pests. He actively encourages fellow farmers to reduce dependence on chemical fertilisers and adopt eco-friendly cultivation practices.
Recognising the growing market potential, Sanjeev also expanded into flower trading by strengthening his wife T. Jayashree Reddy’s registered enterprise, Happy Dukan. The business now procures and distributes nearly 25 varieties of flowers sourced from multiple states, creating an extensive supply network that serves retailers and wholesale buyers across eastern India.
Today, the enterprise has evolved into one of southern Odisha’s prominent flower businesses, generating an annual turnover of around ₹1 crore while providing year-round employment to a dozen permanent workers besides creating seasonal livelihood opportunities for many others.
Looking back, Sanjeev says every setback became a lesson that shaped his next success. His journey from a secure corporate career to building a thriving agribusiness stands as an example of how innovation, persistence and informed risk-taking can transform challenges into opportunities.
