Bhubaneswar, July 30 (UDN): Heavy rainfall has triggered a breach in the temporary coffer dam of the under-construction Kanupur Major Irrigation Project in Keonjhar district, prompting authorities to issue a flood alert for downstream areas along the Baitarani River.
The breach occurred at Basudevpur village under Joda block after continuous rain increased pressure on the temporary earthen structure. Following the incident, authorities opened the required dam gates to regulate water flow and manage the situation safely.
Alert sirens were sounded near the project area, while police personnel and local administration teams were deployed to monitor developments. Residents living near the river and in low-lying areas have been advised to remain cautious and avoid venturing close to the water.
The district administration has issued alerts for vulnerable areas in Joda, Champua, Patna, and Jhumpura blocks, with officials closely watching water levels in downstream locations, including Anandpur and Akhuapada.
Authorities are carrying out continuous assessments and taking precautionary measures to minimise risks to communities. People have been urged to follow official advisories and cooperate with emergency teams during the situation.
The Kanupur Major Irrigation Project, which was targeted for completion by July 2026, may face delays due to the impact of heavy rainfall and damage to the temporary structure. Officials said restoring normal conditions and ensuring public safety remain the immediate priorities.
