Heavy Rainfall Forecast Across Odisha; IMD Issues Yellow Alert

Bhubaneswar, July 11 (UDN): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for Odisha, predicting increased rainfall activity across the State due to a possible low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, a cyclonic circulation is currently active over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh. Under favourable atmospheric conditions, the system is likely to intensify into a low-pressure area, leading to enhanced monsoon activity over Odisha.

The State is expected to witness widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds during the next few days. The intensity of rainfall is likely to increase from July 13, with several districts expected to receive heavy showers.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert till July 17 for several districts, including Sundargarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds in some areas.

The weather department has advised people to remain cautious during thunderstorms and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities.

Rainfall activity has already increased in parts of Odisha. In the last 24 hours, rainfall was recorded at multiple locations, with Gurundia in Sundargarh district receiving the highest rainfall of 71 mm.

Odisha has recorded 341 mm of rainfall between June 1 and July 10, which is about 12 per cent above the normal average. While several districts have received excess or normal rainfall, Sundargarh, Nabarangpur, Deogarh, and Kalahandi continue to face rainfall deficits.

The IMD has stated that active monsoon conditions are likely to continue across Odisha during the coming week, and authorities are monitoring the situation closely to ensure timely preparedness and response.
