Baripada, July 8: Continuous heavy rainfall has caused the collapse of a bridge in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, disrupting road connectivity and affecting transportation in the area.
The bridge, which served as a crucial link for several villages, was washed away after incessant rains triggered a sharp rise in the water level of the local river. The incident has cut off vehicular movement, leaving residents to take longer alternative routes to access nearby towns and essential services.
Officials said no casualties were reported in the incident. However, the collapse has significantly impacted the movement of commuters, students, emergency services and the transportation of essential commodities.
Following the incident, district administration and Works Department officials rushed to the site to assess the extent of the damage. Barricades have been erected around the collapsed bridge, and public entry has been restricted to prevent accidents.
Authorities are evaluating the structural damage and exploring temporary arrangements to restore connectivity at the earliest. A detailed technical assessment has also been initiated to prepare for the reconstruction of the damaged bridge.
The district administration has appealed to residents to avoid using the affected route and to follow traffic advisories issued by local authorities. Officials have also urged people to exercise caution as heavy rainfall continues in several parts of northern Odisha.
The bridge collapse comes amid widespread monsoon showers across the state, with several rivers witnessing rising water levels. Authorities said they are closely monitoring the situation and have directed field officials to remain on alert to respond to any rain-related emergencies.
The administration has assured that efforts are underway to restore normal connectivity and minimise inconvenience to the affected
